FREDDIE REDD IS RWA TO PLAY GIGS - PLEASE BOOK THIS NATIONAL TREASURE FOR YOUR FESTIVAL OR SCHOOL

Dear Friends,

God has blessed me with 80 years of life on this earth still in good health and able to play the music I have dedicated my life to... bebop. I have had very successful performances in recent years but they have been few and far between. My close friend, fellow musician and patron, Dr. Nelson Harrison has kept me from losing faith and has helped sustain me and my wife Valerie in tangible and practical ways over the last 5+ years. He wants to help my music be restored into the public domain and my performance career be revivified. He has served as my liason to the world since we met and has enabled me to have a voice on the internet.

He helped me get bookd on The Marian McPartland Show - Piano Jazz in 2005 which was aired on NPR in February 2006. From that show I was booked for a "Re-Connection" concert in my native New York City in February, 2007 at the Merkin Concert Hall where I was re-united with former sidemen Louis Hayes and Lou Donaldson and also accompanied by Mickey Bass and Dwayne Burno on bass and Donald Harrison on alto sax playing the music from "The Connection." The concert received rave reviews which you can find on this site. From that appearance I was interviewed for a feature article in Jazzman Magazine in Paris France which appeared in the April 2007 issue. From that point my liason, Dr. Harrison, was contacted by an agent in Paris, who has booked me with a stellar quartet for 2 festivals and some club dates in Paris in mid-July, 200

Due to lack of work I have been living in a mobile home in Los Angeles on a meager monthly veterans pension check, yet the reviews I get for performing keep me hopeful that the jazz public still wants to see me and hear my music. I asked Dr. Harrison to publish my plea in the hope that it might reach the attention of some industry people or educators interested in helping me be restored to active performing. It's hard to make it on one gig/year yet I am so grateful that I can still play and I have been writing new material for many years that has never been heard publicly.

This is an open letter saying to the jazz world that Freddie Redd is alive and well, has chops and wants to travel. I am informed that others are selling my music all over the internet (even ringtones) but I receive no compensation or even acknowledgement that I am still alive from those sources. If you can help me with bookings, influence or in any tangible way, I believe my greatest contributions to the jazz world are yet to come.

I have no phone where I can be reached but I can return calls using a phone card. I call Dr. Harrison for my messages daily and you can always get a mesage to me through him at 412-780-3011.

I can receive mail at the following:

P. O. Box 125

I just turned 80 on May 29, 2008 and any card, message or word of encouragement will be greatly appreciated.

FALSE CLAIMS CONTINUE TO EXPLOIT MY MUSIC TO THE CONNECTION

To Whom It May Concern:

In 1960 I wrote the musical score for an off-Broadway play about drug addiction entitled The Connection written by Jack Gelber.  It won three Obies, one was for Best Play of the Year.

One night after a performance I was approached by Alan Lorber and Ernest Kelly, partners in a publishing company called, Jeneva Music.   They wanted to publish the music.  I agreed and signed a publishing agreement with them.

After many years (20-25) I have not received any royalties or monies other than an initial signing agreement with them which ran out sometime in the 1980s.  The musical score copyrights are now owned entirely by me and are registered in my LLC publishing company called Fair Play in Jazz.  Jeneva Music has continued to lay claim to the publishing rights to the music from The Connection in spite of the fact that I had recovered ownership of the music.

They, I am sure, are basing their claims to the music on the fact that I recorded an album of the music for their record label called Felsted Records, which I recorded under the pseudonym of “I Ching” to avoid a conflict of interest with another label.  The original cast album was recorded for the Blue Note label.

Jeneva Music put out a print version of the music also.  Their next exploitation of my music came as they licensed the music to the State Theatre in Stockholm, Sweden for a production of the play.  Not only did they license the music but they also claimed co-authorship of the music.  I did not find out about this transaction until I visited Sweden in 1991.

I have in my possession the original contract they negotiated with the Stockholm State Theatre plus the cash receipts earned from the run of the play there.  I have tried everything I could do to gain what was due me in terms of monies, to no avail.  I decided to call them in New York one day from Sweden and got this response to my request for any and all monies due me.  Alan Lorber said that he would mail to me all monies due me.  He sent me a check for $341.00 along with an agreement he wanted me to sign that said that the $341.00 was to be acknowledged by me as payment-in-full for any and all royalties due me.

I signed and sent back to him a note acknowledging that I received $341.00 only and did not accept that money as having been paid-in-full for the royalties Jeneva Music owned me.  I never heard from them again.

Also the music was used in a film of The Connection produced and directed by documentary film-maker Shirley Clark, which has been and is still being sold over the internet and at Blockbuster and other similar film and video stores.  They have never sent to me any royalty statements for the film either.

I believe that Jeneva Music has been defrauding me for many years.  I have all the necessary documents to verify my claims.

Jeneva Music is a BMI publishing company like me and to this day they are still claiming my music to be theirs.  I have very solid evidence that they are still doing this and I have never been able to litigate my claims.  I have no other option but to publicize my plight in this manner to shine the light of day on such unscrupulous people who gain by exploiting artists like me knowing we are not likely to be able to use the expensive legal system to achieve justice.

Sincerely,

Freddie Redd

P.S.  Please feel free to comment on this blog any knowledge or suggestions that I might pursue to bring those responsible to task.

The New York Times - Jazz Listings

Jazz Listings By THE NEW YORK TIMESPublished: February 16, 2007 RECONNECTED: THE FREDDIE REDD QUARTET (Monday) In the late 1950s, the pianist Freddie Redd wrote music for “The Connection,” a landmark Off Broadway play in which he also appeared onstage. Released on Blue Note, the subsequent album became a hard-bop classic, though that didn’t prevent Mr. Redd from slipping into obscurity. He resurfaces here with the bassist Mickey Bass and the drummer Louis Hayes; Donald Harrison inherits the alto saxophone part memorably played by Jackie McLean, who died last year. Another alto saxophone veteran, Lou Donaldson, appears in the concert’s first half. At 8 p.m., Merkin Concert Hall, 129 West 67th Street, (212) 501-3330, kaufman-center.org; $30 in advance, $35 on Monday. (Chinen)

    MARY'S HOT PICK

By MARY HUHNFebruary 16, 2007 -- IN 1960, Freddie Redd (pictured), a bebop pianist and actor, created the music for the "The Connection," a controversial play about junkies. The artist, who has played with legends such as Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins and Charles Mingus, acted and played piano in the show in London, Paris and here. The New York-born Redd, who settled on the West Coast, returns to the city on Monday at 8 p.m. for "Reconnected: The Freddie Redd Quartet with Donald Harrison" at Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Center (129 W. 67th St., off Broadway; [212] 501-3330, merkinconcerthall.org) as part of its "Re-Issue: Classic Recordings Live" series. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 on the day of the show. The quartet includes alto saxophonist Harrison, 43, who's known for creating "nouveau swing" style (he's filling in for the late Jackie McLean), bassist Mickey Bass and drummer Louis Hayes. Lou Donaldson, a 79-year-old sax player from the swing jazz era, will be also featured, and WGBH radio's Steve Schwartz will interview Redd onstage. While Redd has continued to perform around L.A., he hasn't had an instrument to compose or practice on for decades. The Kaufman Center will present the 78-year-old with a Korg 01/WFD keyboard, which was donated to the Kaufman Center by Lesley Gore. It's everyone's party.

Variety Review of Freddie Redd Concert - February 19, 2007

     Freddie Redd Quartet

(Merkin Concert Hall; 445 seats; $35 top)

    By DAVID SPRAGUE

Presented by Kaufman Center. Musicians: Freddie Redd, Lou Donaldson, Donald Harrison, Mickey Bass, Louis Hayes. Reviewed Feb. 19, 2007.

Pianist Freddie Redd was one of the more mercurial characters on the Big Apple jazz scene of the late '50s and early '60s, darting around the edges of both the hard bop scene and the avant-garde theatrical realm -- and forging a powerful bond between the two by scoring Jack Gelber's 1959 heroin addiction allegory "The Connection." Like many of his contemporaries, the septuagenarian pianist virtually disappeared from the public eye for a lengthy spell, emerging for occasional low-profile gigs in his adopted Los Angeles. But thanks in part to a 2005 Blue Note reissue of "The Connection," interest in Redd's work began building again -- leading to this touted one-night Gotham stand focused on its songs. Before tackling that group of emotionally daunting pieces, Redd offered something of a breezy palate cleanser -- in the form of a spry set anchored by guest saxophonist Lou Donaldson. While Redd vamped with a wink and a nod, the ever-irascible reedman veered took the reins, blowing with a fleet ferocity that belied his stationary stance and peppering the aud with anecdotes about Miles Davis "when he still played jazz" (as an intro to "Bye Bye Blackbird") and more Viagra jokes than the staid hall had likely hosted before. Redd's reading of songs from "The Connection" -- with Donald Harrison standing in for his original foil, the late Jackie McLean -- was just as vivid, albeit emanating from the opposite end of the emotional spectrum. Alternating between Technicolor pieces suggesting a dream-state sense of suspended animation and breathless runs evoking the tension and release of an opiate expedition, Redd played with an engaging delicacy -- matched in the soft-spoken onstage interview he granted between sets. Much of Redd's playing was couched in a sort of street-corner vernacular, dominated by light, quipping runs that were more akin to shooting the breeze than haranguing passers-by. That style lent an indefatigable brightness to the New Orleans-inflected march "Sister Salvation" and enveloped the self-explanatorily titled "O.D." in a lightheaded haze that blended darkness and reverie in equal parts. He's probably too self-effacing to pursue a full-fledged comeback campaign, but if this first step is any indication, Redd won't be sliding back into the shadows any time soon.  http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117932861.html?categoryid=1266&cs=1
